How it works
To convert a volume, enter the amount above and pick its unit — US and imperial measures are listed separately because a US gallon and an imperial gallon are different sizes despite sharing a name, and the result is calculated in your browser.
The reason this page needs to exist separately from a general converter is that the US and imperial systems use the same words for different volumes, and no amount of context makes it obvious which one a recipe or a fuel figure means. An imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres against the US gallon’s 3.785411784 — a 20% difference, which is why UK and US miles-per-gallon figures are not comparable without converting first.
It gets less intuitive inside the gallon. An imperial pint is 20 imperial fluid ounces where a US pint is 16 US fluid ounces, so an imperial pint is 20% larger. But the fluid ounces themselves run the other way: the imperial fluid ounce is 28.413 ml and the US one is 29.574 ml, so a US fluid ounce is about 4% larger. Two units, same name, differing in opposite directions.
Everything here is defined against the litre, which is exactly one cubic decimetre. The US customary units descend from the Queen Anne wine gallon of 231 cubic inches and are therefore exact in terms of the inch, and through it the metre. The imperial units were redefined in 1985 as exactly 4.54609 litres to the gallon.
For cooking specifically, use the cooking converter instead — cups are not one size either, and converting a cup to grams needs the density of what is in it.

FAQ
Is a US gallon the same as an imperial gallon?
No. A US gallon is 3.785 litres and an imperial gallon is 4.546 litres — the imperial gallon is about 20% larger. This is why a car’s mpg figure changes depending on which side of the Atlantic quoted it.
How many ml in a fluid ounce?
A US fluid ounce is 29.5735 ml; an imperial fluid ounce is 28.4131 ml. Both are listed above under their own systems so the right one can be picked deliberately.
Why is an imperial pint bigger but an imperial fluid ounce smaller?
Because the pint is defined by how many fluid ounces it contains, and the counts differ: 20 for imperial, 16 for US. The imperial pint holds more despite each of its ounces being slightly smaller.
How many litres in a gallon of petrol in the UK?
4.54609 litres, since UK fuel was historically sold by the imperial gallon. Petrol has been sold by the litre in the UK since 1988, but mpg figures still use the imperial gallon.
Should I use this for recipe measurements?
For liquids, yes. For anything measured in cups where you want the weight, use the cooking converter — a cup is a volume and a gram is a mass, so the conversion between them depends on the ingredient.
