How it works
To add page numbers to a PDF, drop the file onto this page and choose the position and starting number — the numbers are stamped onto the existing pages in your browser, leaving the rest of the document untouched.
Page numbers are drawn onto each page as real text, in Helvetica, at the position and size you pick. Because they are text rather than an image, they stay crisp at any zoom level and print exactly as they appear on screen.
The two settings that trip people up are "start at" and "skip first", and they do different jobs. "Skip first" controls which pages get stamped at all — set it to 1 and the cover page is left clean. "Start at" controls what number is printed on the first stamped page. Together they handle the common case of a report whose cover is unnumbered and whose body should begin at 1, and the less common one where a chapter continues the numbering of a document that came before it, beginning at, say, 47.
Three styles are available. A plain number is the conventional choice for most documents. The "1 / 10" form is useful when a reader needs to know whether pages are missing, which matters for anything printed and handed around. "Page 1 of 10" is the most explicit and suits formal or legal documents where being unambiguous is worth the extra width.
The numbers are drawn on top of the existing page content. If a document already has a footer where you are placing them, they will overlap it — moving them to another corner or increasing the margin is usually enough to avoid a collision. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
