A watermark is text drawn over every page of the document, usually at an angle and at low opacity so the content underneath stays readable. It is how a document announces its own status — DRAFT so nobody circulates a version that is not final, CONFIDENTIAL so a reader knows the handling rules, or a company name across a proof so it is obvious where a leaked copy came from.
Opacity is the setting worth spending time on. Around 20 to 30 percent is usually the sweet spot: clearly visible, but not so heavy that it fights with the text beneath. Angled text tends to read as a watermark rather than as content, which is why 45 degrees is the conventional choice. Tiling repeats the text across the whole page instead of placing it once in the centre, which is harder to crop out of a screenshot but noisier to read through.
