How it works
To convert a shoe size, pick the men’s, women’s, or children’s chart above and the system your size is in — the matching row shows the equivalent US, UK, EU, and Japanese sizes, though brands vary by up to a full size against any published chart.
Unlike the other converters in this category, this one is a lookup rather than a calculation, and that is not a shortcut — there is no formula. Each system was defined separately from a different starting point. The English size counts barleycorns, three to the inch, from a fixed origin. The Continental system uses the Paris point of two thirds of a centimetre. Japanese sizing is Mondopoint: the foot length in centimetres, used directly as the size. The conversions between them are conventions published by manufacturers rather than mathematical identities, which is why the whole chart stays on screen with your row highlighted instead of a single number being presented as the answer.
The one column that means something physical is foot length. If you have a size from one system and want another, the chart is the best available answer; if you are buying from a country whose sizes you do not know at all, measure instead. Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe, and measure the distance. Do both feet and use the larger — most people have a measurable difference — and measure at the end of the day, when feet are at their largest.
Two relationships are worth carrying in your head. US women’s sizes run about 1.5 numbers above US men’s for the same foot, so a women’s 9 is roughly a men’s 7.5. UK sizes run about 0.5 below US men’s and about 2.5 below US women’s — two different gaps, which is the error most quick conversions make.

Women’s sizing runs on its own numbering in the US and shares the UK and EU scales with men’s. A US women’s 8 is a UK 5.5 and an EU 39.

Japanese sizes are the foot length in centimetres, so this column doubles as the JP size. It is the only value in the chart that is a measurement rather than a convention, and the one to use when a brand publishes its own chart.

What is a US size 9 in EU sizes?
A US men’s 9 is an EU 42.5 and a US women’s 9 is an EU 40.5 — the two charts are numbered differently, so the men’s or women’s selection has to be right before the conversion is.
How do I measure my foot for shoe size?
Stand on paper with your heel against a wall, mark the end of your longest toe, and measure from wall to mark. Measure both feet, use the larger, and do it at the end of the day when feet have swollen slightly.
